Thunderstorms rolled through the area last night. The power went out and rendered Linksys WRTG54 v.5 router a brick. The power LED was flashing rapidly, and I tried several things, including holding in the reset button for 5 seconds, then 30 seconds, then as I powered it off. I held that button in when I powered it back on. No change. This is apparently an indication of the firmware being corrupted, so I downloaded the latest firmware for the router from Linksys and
tried to force it by using TFTP. No luck. The PC was not getting any response from the router. Power LED still blinking. I read something about a JTAG cable, and maybe I'll try that sometime on it, because apparently it's a
pretty powerful router that with the right firmware can do a lot more than manage my home network.
So I went to Office Depot today to buy another, and I thought I had. I wasn't paying much attention, and I ended up with a Linksys wireless access point instead of a router. The picture on the box looked the same. Guess I should've read the big letters on the box that said "Wireless Access Point." I wondered at the checkout why it cost $30 more than what it should have. Anyhow, I got it home, realized my mistake and took it back, swapping it for the a router. Beware this mistake. It's an easy one.
I haven't figured out what good a wireless access point is to a home user yet, but I'm sure it's something I'll end up needing in the next couple of years. When is it going to end?
